Nov. 6-20, Dec. 4-18: Healing the Heart of Democracy
To recover from the election, Adult Education will discuss Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit by Parker Palmer. We meet in the More Light Room at 9:30 a.m. Sundays Nov. 6-20 and Dec. 4-18.
All are welcome and books are available to purchase. Feel free to join the discussion whether or not you have read the book.
The author writes that the United States has a malaise that is leading to cynicism and self-centeredness. Palmer’s antidote is found in healing the heart of our democracy, so that we might emerge from this private focus to a public one, which recognizes our interdependence. Inspired by his efforts to understand democracy in the writing of Abraham Lincoln, Alexis de Tocqueville, Rosa Parks, and others, he says that history is made up of “a million invisible acts of courage and the incremental gains that came with them.”
